Architectural and urban design contest
The "Powerhouse Competition" was an architectural and urban design contest held by Southwark Council in 2006. It sought innovative design concepts to transform the iconic, decommissioned Bankside Powerhouse (now the Tate Modern) and its surrounding public spaces into a dynamic cultural and economic hub. The competition highlighted the London Borough of Southwark's ongoing regeneration, aligning with broader metropolitan strategies to cement the UK capital as a global powerhouse.
Our winning proposal for a ‘Kinetic Learning Centre’ would have provided sport and play facilities for children through which their activity and movement would generate energy.
Through the human effort of athletics, gymnasium and trampoline the users would literally generate power that could be sent back to the electrical grid to contribute to London’s electrical needs.
